Getting Ready to Get Down

My favorite song "Getting Ready to Get Down" is by an Idaho boy about a Missouri girl. I am from Missouri married to an Idaho guy and this song is really a humorous story of my life. Its by Josh Ritter. See/listen to it here if you want to smile.

Tomorrow (Saturday evening) we are going to have a barbecue at our house. We're expecting close to 30 people. The weather is going to be perfect and we are having a great time getting ready. We'll do the traditional foods, burgers, dogs, baked beans, potato salad, etc. and I am making a chocolate zucchini cake and a preachers cake for dessert. I am setting up tables and chairs with old quilts for table clothes and bouquets of daisies for center pieces. We'll have music, drinks and a good time.

So, since today is a big prep day and I wanted to enjoy the process, I dressed to feel good. I've said before, clothes make me smile. They are a form of art that I can participate in with gusto! I am wearing a sleeveless tank dress and since I look like I am wearing a tent in these A line dresses, I added a white sweatshirt around my waist. I put on old converse tennis shoes and carried a fun canvas bag for when I run into town to do last minute shopping. I am soooo, Getting Ready to Get Down!

In the Pink

A vibrant pink color really says summer. Today I decided to look in my closet and find something I haven't worn for a while instead of my regular old jeans and t-shirts. I saw this bright shift and thought wow, why haven't I worn this more. I love the crepe fabric of this dress. It provides excellent coverage but is still light weight. It was still a little chilly in the morning so I added a tan cardigan. A tan bag and shoes were all I needed to complete the outfit. My shoes and bag have gold accents so I picked a gold necklace for jewelry. My pictures have been fuzzy lately because the sun is so bright and I am clueless on how to set the camera accordingly.

Stay tuned, in the near future I will be posting a blog where I am participating in Rock The Vote x POPSUGAR T-Shirt Partnership. They sent me the cutest t-shirt which I will style in and effort help spread awareness about the importance of registering to vote, getting involved in the election process and most importantly, VOTING.

Late Summer to Fall Transitioning

Like a lot of people who love fashion; I have my eye on the fall season. The sales are going gangbusters all over the place. I know for sure the trend I am in love with for fall and even transitioning from summer. The duster is absolutely my favorite silhouette. I started dabbling with it in early spring with some long cardigans that I could use all season here in the mountains because with our climate you almost always need a wrap at some point in the day. Then I found a couple of really cute lightweight dusters that were just perfect for casual dressing and even for dressing up. I could wear them with almost anything, jeans, skirts, shorts (see here), even bathing suits and over summer PJs. So needless to say, I have a few dusters in several colors heading to my doorstep for the seasons to come. Playing around with one of my dusters, I put together this outfit that I could wear pretty much from now all through fall and winter. I have on black jeans and booties, a sleeveless leopard print top and my duster. I carried a brown handbag with it for contrast. If I get too warm, I can take off the duster and still look stylish. Yep, dusters are my thang this year!

Old Jeans are Like Old Friends

Old jeans are like old friends, they are comfortable, familiar, and always there when you need them. This is a pair of Lucky jeans that I bought about 12 or 13 years ago. There have been many times when I thought I should donate them but I kept them because I like them. One of the things I love about fashion today is that anything is acceptable. Old (vintage) is on trend. I put on a light weight summer top and a hat I was ready for a day of relaxing outdoors with leisurely walks, exploring the forest and breathing in the fresh mountain air. This is simple style for a simple life. You don't have to always be dressed up to feel and look good, in my opinion. Pull out some of your old pieces and have fun styling them!

Short Pants

So what are we calling short pants these days? Are they cropped, Capri, ankle pants? The pants in this post were called Capri's when I bought them several years ago and because they were so cute I held onto them for several years until I thought they were out of style. But today since we are having  our version of a warm day (77 degrees in mid afternoon), I thought I would see if I could style my old "short pants." I love the neutral color and decided to stay with it for the whole outfit. The top is old too and has an underlay that hangs lower than the part you see. Since the pants had such cute details, I decided to tuck the under lay in and give the top a cropped top look. I loved the outcome, added wedge heels, a straw bag and hat. I have a family reunion this weekend and I am thinking I may just wear this outfit!

Show A Little Bootie

The last couple of weeks I have been seeing booties all over blogsphere. Everyone is excited about sales that focus on fall fashion. I took a different route, however. I looked at what was new, then looked in my closet and found things that provided the same vibe. I also went to one of my favorite sights, Nordstrom Rack, because I know a secret (well maybe it's not a secret) but many things last season that I thought I had to have but decided not to get, are being sold this season for 50% -75% off. Wait until you see my finds! I will put them on my new page called, Northwest Mountain Style Boutique (here or top of page)! But first, it looks like I have some splainin (a real word?) to do with this outfit.

It appears we are not going to have much of a real summer here in the northwest mountains of Idaho. At the very least it is going to be a short one. So far we have only had a handful of days where it even reached 80 degrees. Our nights are so cool still that the heat kicks on in the early mornings. I am not complaining, I actually have grown to love our climate and I get to wear things like this in the middle of the summer. I got this midi skirt in the early spring. This type of skirt is not at all flattering for my body type, but I don't care, it is flowy (not sure a word), fun and versatile. I envisioned country life (mine) and thought a shirt tied at the waist would be fun and to countrify (again, not a word), it even more, I put on booties! My straw bag is a thrift find from last year that I just adore. It says vacation and is in perfect shape. Score! I am holding my skirt up for several reasons. One, I wanted to show my booties, two, I wanted to show the cute skirt lining and three, I knew it was probably something a mature women shouldn't do! My mom, always said, "You can't tell Cheryl anything!"

My outfit is made up of items that are no longer available but these are similar. That shirt is perfect and that skirt is cuter than the one I have. I have wanted the first pair of booties for a long time (crazy about them) and the other pair would be so cute. All the straw bags are just too cute!

Puddle jumper flight to Joseph OR

My husband and I often take our little plane on shorts trips where we can go out to eat. Last night we took the short 30 minute flight to Joseph OR. It was a beautiful evening at about 70 degrees; perfect for the adventure. The Joseph airport is about a mile and a half from town so we just walk to the restaurant.  I wanted to be comfortable for the trip so I wore a cap to keep the sun out of my eyes, a button down shirt, Levis and sneakers. My little red Rebecca Minkoff bag held everything I needed and added fun color to the outfit.

Here is our ride!

Flying over Hell's Canyon. We're at about 8,500 feet.

Inside the cockpit. This plane gives us all kind of information while we fly. The screen on the right here shows us how far we are above the mountains. If we get close to the red areas, we go higher. My husband is an amazing pilot so I always feel safe.

We're about 500 feet off the ground lined up for landing.

And here we are touching down!

Free People + Rebecca Minkoff = Lunch Date

I love putting together casual outfits that you can hang around the house in, or meet a friend for lunch. This outfit meets the requirements for both. The stars of the show, are my Free People top and Rebecca Minkoff bag. I wanted to go with mostly black for this outfit, so I could use the bag for a pop of color. The leopard belt seemed to tie it all together. Black chandelier earrings were the only jewelry needed.

I have to talk about this top. You have probably seen it everywhere on everyone. I have been eyeing it for months. The first version I saw was a Tibi and cost way more than I wanted to pay. Soon however, I was seeing other brands making it, but it would go out of stock faster than you could hit "checkout!" Last week, it came back in stock and I decided to get it, in black, and white. I love how you can return things to Nordstrom so easily and free. I always know if it doesn't work I can return it. I won't be returning this top and here is why. It is well made with nice fabric (not see through), it fit perfectly so was TTS; I have on a small. The main reason I will keep it, is that it is comfortable. I have a few off the shoulder tops and if I raise my arms for anything they fall off the shoulder, slide up or down or both. This top raises a little but stays in place so I am not adjusting it all the time. Also, this top rests higher on my shoulders; it doesn't sit way down on my arms making me feel like it is falling off. Another thing I love is the sleeves. They tie so you can wear the sleeves long where they look bell shaped or tighten the ties so they stay up higher on your arm. Absolutely a keeper! It is tunic length on me, so I can wear it out or tuck it in somewhere if I choose. A very versatile top!

One of my little buddies had perfect photo bombing timing in this picture. I love it!

This outfit was so comfortable I could wear it all day just hanging around the house.

Bell Bottoms + Bell Sleeves = That 70's Show!

It's no secret that I am a child of the 70's. Actually I turned ten in 1970 and from that point on, clothes thrilled me. I will never forget the styles. But bells on the bottoms weren't enough for me; I loved bells on my tops. Sometimes the bell was the shape of the top and sometimes it was the shape of the sleeve. We also wore off the shoulder, cropped, bodysuits and everything that is now so trendy. I am happy to wear these styles again. It is nostalgic and fashionable.

Let's talk trends, shall we? My top is lined accept for the sleeves which are sheer, but the trendy part is the full bell sleeves. Aren't they fun? I see them a lot on blogs and in the stores. My jeans are a sailor style which was big in the 70s also. The patch pockets on the front and the very flared legs are more trendy each day. The straw bag and high wedge shoes seemed to finish this look. I remember my first pair of platform shoes (big smile on my face). You can't see them but I wore bright orange tassel earrings for jewelry.

The other day when I was out running on the trail near my home I ran into these young bucks. I was close to six feet away and they just looked at me. I asked them to move and let me by to no avail and then waited for no cars to be near by and clapped my hands and still they weren't going to move. I threw a pinecone gently in their direction and they just walked up to it an sniffed it and continued eating. I gave up, turned around and ran home. I am glad they were not afraid of me, and I was happy to let them have it their way. They are so beautiful and remind of the good in my life.

Here they are just walking out from a side road onto the trail in front of me.

Folks in this town are used to deer being everywhere and they are so careful and respectful. This community loves to share space with these and all the wild creatures of nature.

J Crew + Hunter = Summer Mountain Style

J Crew + Hunter = Summer Mountain Style if you ask me! We have had an unusually cool summer in the Idaho mountains and this weekend is a perfect example. Raining with the high of 67 today and predicted high of 51 tomorrow. So what do you do on a cool wet summery day? Why you put on warm, wet resistant clothes and head outside!

A couple of years ago I found this J Crew cotton beach sweater (similar here) on sale and loved it so much I got it in three colors (cream, navy and orange). Cotton sweaters are pretty but also functional where I live. Then, this late spring, I found Hunter boots on sale (same here, love these)and got a couple of pair in different colors (Bright Cerise and Sunset). I already had a pair of navy with dark green and maroon trim). These boots are worn often in our climate. They are warm and cover a good part of your legs to keep you dry. Plus they have that casual; I love the outdoors look. I have been seeing people tying a scarf close around their neck this season and thought that not only was it cute but it would protect my neck from the chill in the air. (love this one and this one) I grabbed a hat (similar here and here) and camera and headed out the door to capture the beauty of my country mountain life.

Johnny Was Tunic

Similar top here. Same shoes here. Same earrings here

Being barely five foot, five inches tall really makes wearing tunics difficult. They can overpower you and make you look sloppy. Since I love tunics so much I have spent time trying to find those that will work for me and learning how to style them to be more flattering. I find that a very slim pant helps the most by elongating your body. Heels or wedges are nice too, to balance things.

I have had my eye on the Johnny Was brand for a couple of years and finally this year purchased a few tops. These tops are beautifully embroidered and come in vibrant colors. I have the red one which is my favorite, a dark blue one and a white one. They are so light weight and summery and add a festive vibe to every occasion. I wore this top with white skinny ankle pants and wedge shoes.  And you have to be getting tired of seeing this same hat but it was the perfect finish to my outfit. I added Kendra Scott earrings in turquoise to bring out the colors in the top.

Happy Fourth of July!

My holiday weekend has been so wonderful. My family has been here since Friday and we have been celebrating with little excursions around town, to the lake, boat rides, cooking, eating, toasting and being grateful for family time together.

We had to travel a couple of hours to Boise to pick up family at the air port on Friday and I knew it was going to be hot. It was predicted, close to 100 degrees. I decided to wear shorts with a white t-shirt and sandals. I added a boat hat and light duster for extra protection from the sun and chilly indoor areas. I carried my beautiful white tassel bucket bag. This bag has been a summer necessity. I loved the neutral colors of this outfit. It seemed so cool, casual and summery. I never wear gold jewelry but my parents got this beautiful gold necklace for my birthday. It is heavy, shaped like a dog tag with a tiny diamond chip. It is so simple, classic and my style and it went with the gold accents on my shoes and bag. It all came together just right.
