Fun Fashion Ideas For Summer

The Scoop

I told you in my last post that I had ordered a lighting kit for picture taking. As of today I have it all set up but no idea how to use it. I have searched online for instruction but no one can just simply tell you where to place the lights in relation to the camera. Just the basics without a full photography class. Anyway I couldn’t find anything. If you know of anything to help please let me know.

Meanwhile in this post I am showing you a few looks all taken the same day. The first was when the sun was shinning, the second it was cloudy and the third look was taken while it was pouring down rain. Most of these photos were taken in the same room of the house. You can see how the photos turned out. I used the auto correct on the last outfit just FYI.

jumper 7.JPG

Look One

I have been wanting a pair of floral wide leg cropped pants and I have been wanting a jumpsuit. Here I have both in one look. It’s a floral jumpsuit with wide cropped legs. It is so comfortable and I know I will be hanging out in this look a lot this summer. I wore wedge sandals and carried my Rebecca Minkoff bag. I wore bright blue earrings to bring out the blue in the jumper.

Look Two

This maxi skirt is a soft knit and short enough for flats so I wore flat tan sandals. I wore a graphic tee that I knotted at the waist. I added a jean jacket for a third piece.

This look is all old stuff too but I am linking great options.

Maxi Dress Style For Summer

orange maxi 4.JPG

The Scoop

Officially summer is one month away but I have already completely organized my closet so summer style is up front. All the casual tops, shorts and dresses are just waiting for their season in the sun.

My husband turned a small storage room in the basement into a seasonal closet for me so I was able to take all my coats, sweaters and cold weather clothes down there and store them away. Now I have lots of room for warm weather clothes and shoes.

orange maxi 10.JPG

My Look

One of my favorite things to wear in the summer is a maxi dress and this empire waist one is my very favorite. I have three maxi’s in this style in different colors. All are bright colors for summer but the orange just sings to me. I carried a cute little wicker bag and wore a pair of two tones sandals with chunky heels. For jewelry I wore turquoise earrings to bring out the turquoise in the dress.

My dress is London Times from Nordstrom Rack. I am linking several choices along with some cute bags and earrrings. This is such a fun simple statement look for summer.

Fashion - Shoulder Talk For Us Over 50 Ladies

cream top 15.JPG

The Scoop

I love my dogs. This little guy makes me feel like a rock star! He and his sissy ( I call her) are always there watching like I am the most interesting person in the world. If you are a dog lover like me you understand that I spend a lot of time making sure I don’t let them down. We take lots of walks, we nap in a pile on the sofa, we share treats and the fun never ends!

It started raining this week after a few weeks of too perfect to be true spring weather. I realized how bad my lighting is again for picture taking. So I took the plunge and ordered a photography lighting kit. I can’t wait for it to arrive. It has it all even back drops in three colors. Now I can finish setting up my photography studio. We have a finished basement that I have all ready for photo taking except for the lighting. Its big empty, quiet with light colored walls. There are two large windows as in it only a partial underground basement but the lighting I ordered should improve things a lot!

In a couple more weeks we will be heading to the mountains for the summer! I am excited to be in the fresh country mountain air again where I can go mushroom hunting, huckleberry picking and take long quiet hikes and trail runs. I will make summer jams and just enjoy the quiet life for a few months.

Can you believe I got three new posts on the blog this week! I don’t know how it happened but I had a few fun looks to share so there you go! I love spring and summer fashion so much.

cream top 9.JPG

My Look

This is all old but good. My top is so fun with the off shoulders but the tie around the neck keeps it secure. Next are my old DIY hem jeans. I think these were the first pair I took the scissors to. After one pair there was no holding me back and I found no jeans were safe if they were too long. These are a step hem. I added my Sam Edelman mules which have been a favorite for several years and carried my LV Never Full GM bag. For jewelry I wore the emerald necklace my husband surprised me with on our anniversary last year. I’m still sportin’ my hair pins because . . . well because I like them!

cream top 10.JPG

Create Your Own Look

My top is State from Nordstrom, Jeans from Costco, mules Sam Edelman and bag Louie Vuitton (gift from husband). I’m linking really great options for creating your own look.

cream top 7.JPG

Above you get a peek of my dinning room that I painted this spring. I love how it turned out. Below is my formal living room that has a ceiling two stories high so I will have to hire to have it painted. But I have it decorated just the way I want. It’s the most serene room. We’ve had the armoire for so many years. It is an antique from England. The room is filled with my favorite things. Even the silly brass duck.

Fashion - Got Crop Tops?

crop 7.JPG

The Scoop

I would never wear a midriff showing crop top but I do like shorter tops when I am wearing a high waist pair of jeans. Especially if the jeans are over sized, it helps balance the look. But also being from a generation where these tops were very popular I love them! So I thought I would pull together a look using my one and only crop top.

In the picture above I am in my newly painted office and I’m trying to show you that I got my caricature framed and hung up. I just love it! It was done several years ago by @bethbriggs.

crop top 1.JPG

My Look

I got this top in Arizona over the winter. It is a very light weight material and I loved the colors and stripes. The edges of the sleeves and hem are sort of ruffled. It covers everything but still has the illusion of a fun trend. I wore my over sized straight leg “mom jeans” with it and then to add some more seventies vibes I wore my platform sandals and carried an earthy looking bag. For jewelry I wore big hoop earrings which are my favorite type of earring.

crop top 4.JPG

Vintage Bag

In a couple of the pictures you will see my macrame bag that I got at a thrift shop last summer. Oh my gosh gang, back in the day I knew how to do macrame wall hangings. I also cold crochet a fabulous throw.

Create Your Own Look

I am linking everything you need to create your own look. Linking exact jeans (levis) and very similar tops, shoes and bags! And each piece is so fun!

crop top 5.JPG

Another Look

I wanted to show you this dress. Since I was wearing it I got a couple of pictures. I have it in grey too and it is so comfortable that the grey one became a night gown. I wear it almost every night because is so comfy! But the black one I thought I would wear in the day time. It really is like a mumu! I wore my Tommy Bahama flip flops and my Tommy Bahama hat. The flip flops have a little silver pineapple on the top!

black dress 2.JPG

Dress Obsessed

I am linking the exact dress in black and grey. I have both. I haven’t even begun to show ways to style this easy wear dress. I also found some very similar Tommy Bahama flip flops. I have mine in black, navy, and taupe and they go with all things summer! I also found a Tommy Bahama hat that is fabulous!

Fashion-Summer Shorts and Dresses For Us Over 50 Ladies

walmart 22.JPG

The Scoop

As a woman over 50 this voice whispers in my ears often, “Will you look to old to be wearing this?” I usually ignore it and find a way to make whatever it is I want to wear work for me. I guess I’m from the part of the country where women were criticized a lot. Don’t show your aging arms, legs, or neck. Your hair is too long, you look like your trying to look young. Almost anything you did to look and feel good was just bad taste.

Well I’m not trying to look young, I am trying to look fabulous! So cut it out little voices! In this post I am showing my legs and arms and neck! Gracious! Get me some nerve pills. Also something they gave women during menopause because heaven forbid they complained or reacted to how they were feeling.

I’m so glad those days are mostly gone.

walmart 21.JPG

Look One

This lovely dress shows arms, legs and neck and it is fun, pretty and comfortable! I would also wear it with sneakers or sandals. Its a fabulous cotton material that buttons down the front. I took off the white tie that came with it and added a pink patterned Ted Baker scarf to give it a little somethin’ somethin’! A bright pair of pink pumps made this look sing to me! A summer bag completed my look.

walmart 18.JPG

Hair Accessories

I found these pretty little bobby pins at Walmart and knew I would wear them a lot since I am always pulling my hair back or to the side. I put two in and love the look! I tried to find them online but Walmart’s site is still clunky if you ask me and I could not find them. I am sure you can find tons in all the stores though. I’ll link a few pretty ones too.

walmart 14.JPG

Look Two and Three

The next couple of looks start with shorts that are so so comfy. They have elastic waist bands with an added drawstring. I could have went down a size but this was the smallest size so I am making them work. They are a fabric that is light and breathable. Perfect for summer. The tops are also comfy and complete the looks along with sandals. A straw summer bags is the perfect accessory! These are size small so I would say they run a little large but then I kind of like the over sized look.

Create Your Own Look

I’m linking same brand similar style dresses. Same shorts, white tee and Ark Bag. Similar striped top and sandals. My sandals are Sam Edelman and I linked same brand just different colors since mine are old. I have been wearing these three summers now! My pumps and other bags are also old.

One thing I know for sure is that this white Tee is the nicest one I have bought in a long time. It is high quality in fit, style and fabric. I bought five for basics. I want to see if they have them in black now because I wear almost every day.

Wearing Shorts and Straight Leg Cropped Jeans For Us Over 50 Ladies

levis 7.JPG

The Scoop

Hey Gang! I made it back for the Saturday post. I almost thought I wouldn’t get it done because once again I started other projects that were major time and energy sucks. I painted my office which has high vaulted ceilings. It looks and feels so much nicer now. Any way I did manage to find a few things this week that I am mad about and I wanted to share them.

At over 50 are you still open to new trends? I am so on board with trying a new trend if I can make it my own. I was sure I would never wear the so called “mom jeans” but here I am in LOVE with these high waist, straight leg cropped jeans. I even sized up for a more relaxed fit and seriously I think they are so stylish! And by golly I am even embracing the clips in my hair that you are seeing so many ladies wearing! Is there nothing I won’t embrace? Ha ha!

iphone+1.jpg

You Know What Else?

Are you over 50 and still wearing shorts? I have thought over the last few years my days of wearing shorts in public were close to over but this spring the weather has been so fabulous that I have found myself wearing shorts every day the temps hit 70 degrees. Sure my legs don’t look like they did when I was younger but I am fine with my legs and am comfortable sporting a shorts look!

old navy 2.JPG

These Looks

In my first look I am wearing a pair of Levis, high waist straight leg cropped jeans. I went up a size because I thought they would look and feel cute a little over sized. I got the feel part right that’s for sure! I wore a top from Old Navy and in the first picture Sam Edelman Sandals. I layered some of my favorite necklaces, wore my apple watch with my leopard band and picked up cute bobby pins at Walmart for my hair.

My next look is something I am so excited about. I found shorts that have a five inch inseam! Gosh they feel so comfortable and are a length that I love. You can get them in seven inch length too! Finally shorts women can feel good in! I got these shorts in a striped, almost linen but less wrinkling fabric and wore the same top only in red. Both from Old Navy. I also got the shorts in a mustard yellow color. I am thinking I may go back and get the red floral pair that I saw in the store and the top in denim. All on sale right now.

old navy 1.JPG

Outside of the first pair of sandals, all my sandals are old. I carried my Ark bag in some pictures and in the others I carried a fabulous round bag with tassels that I got at TJ Max. It is made out of a sturdy jute fabric that I love!

old navy 4.JPG

Linking exact jeans, shorts, tops, Ark Bag and Sam Edelman Sandals. I got my round bag at TJ Max and linking up a very similar one also from TJ Max.

old navy 6.JPG

You can see all my looks on the LiketoKnow.it app when you search northwestmountainliving. Just download the free app and follow me or go to the shop tab on the blog to see them.

And that’s it gang! I think I could have gone on all day but this gives you an idea of ways I like to wear shorts and other trends.

What is your favorite trend right now?

Tee Dress Style For Us That Are Over 50

tee dress 3.JPG

The Scoop

Good grief Gang, it has been about two months since my last blog post! How did that happen? I have been blogging for over five years now and for at least the last three I haven’t missed a post. But what can I say? I was dried up, had nothing inspiring to share and decided to stop, refresh and see how I felt after some time off.

I missed you all and our interactions a lot. I spent a little time studying the blog medium, trying to figure out where it is going and to find more direction for my blog. Came up empty! Ha ha. But that’s ok, I love to push my creative side and find new ways to do things and sometimes that means taking a break to refocus.

I was also beyond busy with life in general and just couldn’t find the time to do the work a blog requires. I am still way busy but I think I can get a good post in on Saturdays. I’ll try and see how it goes. While I was on break I was doing things like landscaping, painting my family room, dining room, kitchen and a couple of bedrooms. My project list in never ending it seems. Sometimes I worked myself right into bed for a day or two to recuperate. I’m like my dad that way. My mom says he never knows when to quit. But he is going on 88 this year and still rides a motorcycle and plants a garden so I guess it’s not such a bad thing.

Anyway let’s get on with this post, shall we?

tee dress 6.JPG

My Look

So yes we can wear a tee dress after 50. I love my tee dresses, they are comfortable, versatile and simply CUTE! I think it is important to find the right length for your height, this one works for me but usually I prefer shorter dresses to hit the most narrow part of my leg. Finding a dress with a nice weight in the fabric is important too. You don’t want anything showing through because it is too thin, but then you don’t want it too heavy and hot. I got this one at Costco while we were in Arizona this winter.

Now lets look at ways to style it so we get all the wear out of it and bang for our buck! Ha Ha.

For the first look above I added interesting sandals (Sam Edelman) and a bag (Rebbeca Minkoff) with some pop!

tee dress 9.JPG

Try wearing a fun jacket with your tee dress. I love this white distressed jean jacket from last summer.

I got my dress at Costco and they may still have them but here are some fabulous options.

tee dress 11.JPG

Elevate your tee dress with a nice blazer and matching sandals. Everyone should have a white blazer in their closet. It can make anything look dressy! I also grabbed my leopard clutch (Clare V.) which by the way I have a had for so many years and keep using every single season. It is a basic that never goes out of style.

My jackets are old but I’m linking similar ones for you.

tee dress 13.JPG

I took the blazer look one step further and added a fabulous silk scarf.

My clutch is Clave V and I linked it but it is a different color leopard (still really pretty) and I linked other similar bags.

tee dress 16.JPG

Next I added a leopard scarf (BP) around my waist and changed my bag (Marshals) and shoes (Steve Madden). The tan sandals go with anything and I find them very comfortable. My little wicker cross body bag is such a fun summer accessory. Oh and don’t forget to add a hat (Tommy Bahama) for an edgy look.

I am obsessed with all the shoes in this post and I am linking them for you.

Linking exact leopard scarf and other silk options!

tee dress 19.JPG

Big bold sunglasses are hot hot hot right now. I remember wearing them back in the 70s and 80s. Good things come back around eventually. These were from amazon and are out of stock in black.

My hat above a couple of pictures is a Tommy Bahama but I am linking great options!

tee dress 22.JPG

Here I am wearing my sneakers and a ball cap. Boom, ready for my seeing the grandkid’’s ball games or walking around the farmers market, right?

tee dress 24.JPG

My favorite way to wear this dress was with a scarf in my hair. There’s just something about it that makes me feel like I put some effort into the details.

And that’s it gang, I think I could have gone on all day but this gives you an idea of ways I like to style a tee dress!

What is your favorite way to wear a tee dress?

Thanks for stopping by!

Spring Trends Alert on Northwest Mountain Living & Style

The Scoop

I'm on the prowl for spring fashion! And I think I am on to some really fun new things. I thought I would share what I am loving right now that will take me through spring and summer!

Most of these things were something I dabbled in last spring and summer but I am seeing them bumped up a little on the style scale. First, scarves.  I wear them around my neck, wrist, in my hair, around my waist and even tied on my bags. This year they have some fun shapes and sizes so I tied one on the handle of my bag for a fun twist. Second, platforms. I am going crazy over these platform sneakers. They are so cute with jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses! Obsessed. The next thing I am embracing even more fully than before (if that can happen) is tunics (longer tops). They have such a casual relaxed vibe but with all the colors and styles they are a major staple for me.  You can wear them with the hem out, assorted tucks or even as a dress if they are long enough. Fill my closet please!

My Look

In this look I am wearing  a tunic that buttons half way down in neutral stripes. I did a front tuck with this look but sometimes I pull the hem through my belt loop on the side. This is a perfect anytime top. My jeans are Lucky Brand skinny cropped jeans, shoes are platform Steve Madden sneakers and I'm carrying a Tory Burch tote with a scarf from target wrapped around the handle.  You can see the care tag still on my scarf. For some reason I hate to cut those off but I think I will have to in this case. I'm wearing a white watch and Kendra Scott turquoise earrings to complete this look.

Color My Mood

boots 3.JPG

The Scoop

Seriously gang, rich colors like those in this outfit make my heart sing. They make me happy. Finding the perfect combination of colors is a lucky gift when you can find them. These blues and plums complement each other like they were meant to be.

We are back in Idaho checking on the houses in the mountains and valley. There is a ton of snow at the mountain place and it is still coming down. There are avalanche warnings going off on the TV as I write this post. I hope to get some pictures this week. In the valley it is cloudy and raining a ton. Winter in Idaho is never dull, that is for sure. I have learned to enjoy the climate no matter where I am though. I always say, “you can laugh or you can cry and I chose to laugh!”

boots 4.JPG

My Look

I am wearing a Karen Kane top, Free People cardigan, 7 for all Mankind jeans and boots from Target. And gang, they are my favorite pair of OTK boots. Everything in this look is at least a season or two old but I wear them often because of the fun colors. My leather cross body bag is a major fun thrift find bought in Arizona last winter. All I can say it this is one of my favorite winter. outfits.

Welcome Back To My Mountain Life

red 1.jpg

The Scoop

By the time you read this post I will be leaving Arizona after an eight-week visit and be on my way back to our mountain home. We had to cut our trip short because we have so much snow back there that some of our huge pine trees have fallen across our drive and down the sidewalk to our house. Too close for comfort and we are afraid one might fall and hit the house. And all of our security cameras are out except one that is hanging upside down. I think it has been a wild winter up there while we were gone. At any rate we are excited to get back, check on things, sit by a fire and view the beautiful winter wonderland.

red 2.jpg

And So

Needless to say I will be out of pocket for a week or so. I was able to get posts up for the rest of this week and I have been playing around with the design of the blog, so I hope you enjoy that. Check out the main page and the blog pages to see all the new elements I have added. I am trying to make it a little more interesting. and fun!

I really hope you all are having a wonderful winter so far! I will be back with part three of my fitness series of posts as soon as I can along with more fashion, life and style for us over 50 ladies.

While I’m gone you should read this article:

These pictures are from last year. I remember is was fun to get out and play in the snow and share some of my outdoor looks. I am wearing a red coat, black leggings, fun snow boots and a warm cap. No big deal but I loved the bright red in the winter outdoors. I remember I had a red nose too by the end of the shoot!

Poncho Style

free people 2.JPG

The Scoop

The weather here in AZ has been cool and rainy and perfect for wearing ponchos, jackets and for layering. When I lived here for many years I don’t remember many Februaries so chilly but I know those who live here all year long really enjoy this change from the long hot season.

I think we are going to have to cut our stay here short. Our security cameras were hacked and only one is working and it is showing downed trees in the yard at our place in the mountains. These trees are gigantic too. And they are really close to the house. Last year we had one fall on the house. The snow is really deep and heavy this year so a tree falling is fairly common but you don’t want it damaging property. We have friends checking on things so depending on what they find out we will need to go back.

My February Uniform

IMG_9465.JPG

The Scoop

If you have been reading along this month you know I have been all about health and fitness. I have tried to put everything else on the back burner and put my health first. Heart disease runs in my family and some have had the window maker (worst kind of heart attack) at the age I am now. Yep 58. Most recently my brother passed away about a year after his heart attack because it damaged his heart beyond repair. He was 59, had is heart attack at 58. So I am trying to be proactive. I even went to get blood drawn for a special test but passed out before they could get enough blood so I have to go back again. This will be my third try because I keep fainting! Ugh!

Anyway one of my theories is if I am always dressed to workout I will do so when the time is right. You can see my current workout routine here in my last post. Recently I put together these items to make what I am calling my February uniform.

Casual Friday Work Outfit

blazer 9.JPG

The Scoop

I used to work at universities at an executive level and therefore wore a lot of business wear. My favorite was to wear a pants suit but I also loved pencil skirts and sometimes dresses. Since I started working from home I no longer need to dress that formally but now and then I like to wear business casual.

Many workplaces allow business casual on Fridays and some most days of the week. What a wonderful world we live in! Ha ha.

My Look

In my last post I told you I had picked up a couple of black blazers at the thrift shops and how excited I was to style them. In this post I am styling the Banana Republic blazer. I’m wearing it with an older Loft white button down shirt and a new pair of Joe’s cropped jeans and a pair of fabulous black pumps. I found these pumps a couple of years ago, also at a local Phoenix thrift shop. I carried my Louis Vuitton Never Full MM to complete this look.

There is nothing I don’t like about the outfit and I would wear it for so many occasions, like a date night, lunch with friends or even to go shopping. I have other black blazers but this is totally my favorite now.

Linking fabulous blazers from Banana Republic that look just like mine as well as a fabulous J. Crew one. And linking exact jeans too.

Along with your white shirt or tee add a pair of pointy toe pumps and a power bag and you are good to go! I prefer a lower heel, it makes you look more in control somehow.
