the scoop

Hey gang! Well, here I am back in the blogging game. I have been going back and forth for a few months on whether I should continue blogging and I guess I sort of have been going through a mid life crisis. Is there room for me in the blogsphere? Is there a place for women my age to share their fashion and lifestyle? After thinking a LOT about what brought me to blogging in the first place, I decided that I want to continue for at least a little while longer.

You see, I started in the beginning because I wanted a creative outlet, a hobby, something that would be fun for when I had time. Then I noticed that in all the social media you would see so many fabulous bloggers, but for the most part they were young. Relative to me; very young. I wasn’t seeing myself in any of these talented people. I still read these blogs and find I learn so much from them. But I wanted to see women my age more. I wanted to let others see how women age. I wanted to change the sterotypical ideas a lot of society has about us.

So here I am, back at it. Keeping it light and fun though. I never want to add to the drama in this world. You know . . . girls just wanna have fun!

my look

Most of my readers like the fashion side of my blog. And since it is the most fun for me, I am always happy to share my day to day looks. Here is such a fun outfit for fall. I am wearing big old bell bottom jeans, a comfy flannel shirt, blue suede boots and I’m carrying a fabulous green bag. I topped this look off with a navy fisherman’s cap. I can’t tell you how comfy this look is. What I love most about it though is the colors. Dark rich greens and blues are the theme.

Well, not a lot of news in my world, outside of setting up our house in the city which has been way more work than I expected. But I have been taking my time and adding here and there as I go. Lots of fun projects to do as long as I remember that it’s the journey that makes it fun.

Here’s some quick bullets of my life right now.

  • I’m still trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I work out daily in some form or another. Like one day I spent the whole day raking and bagging leaves. Let me tell you, I was sore for days after that. Plus we go to the YMCA almost daily.

  • I love to cook and am always trying new healthy and not so healthy recipes. I am really into soups right now. If you have any soup recipes you love, please send them my way! I will even try to make them and put it on the blog.

  • I have decided to let my hair grow for the winter and it seems to be growing slow lately. I always think everything is because I am getting old. But I think it can also be the time of year. I have heard your hair grows faster in the spring and summer. Myth?

  • I started using Retin A several weeks ago but I’m going really slowing and only using it three times a week. I can’t tell any change yet so the jury is still out. I’m looking for more vibrant skin with smaller pores. It’s supposed to help your skin regenerate more since it slows down as you age.

  • I voted already and am hoping everyone else will vote in the coming election. Here is some useful information if you need it.

  • I watched a couple of wonderful movies on Netflix both staring Jane Fonda and love how she represents women my age in these movies. They aren’t trying to hide the lines in her face or make her look young, she’s the real thing. Here is the trailer to Peace, Love and Misunderstanding. My favorite was Our Souls At Night also starring Robert Redford. Here is the trailer.

  • I’m working on a photo studio in the basement. The pictures with the blank wall were taken there. Lighting is always an issue for me. But I have fun playing with it all1

the scoop

This look started out with this handbag I won on a blog giveaway. I can't remember winning much of anything so it was a cool surprise when I was told I had won this fabulous bag. I had always had my eyes on a few GiGi New York bags but had never taken the plunge. But now that I have one and see the quality I will be investing in more. This exact bag comes in a green that I am obsessed with.  This bag is also the perfect size for me for an everyday bag because I am not one that carries around a lot of things when just doing errands and going out to eat.

The jeans were chosen on this day because they are truly the most comfortable jeans I own. The have stretch and are higher waisted so no pulling them up every five minutes like a lot of my lower waisted jeans. Another reason I picked these jeans for this look is they are a dark wash which I love because they feel a little dressier. Lastly I wore them because I am obsessed with this style. It reminds me of the second decade of my life when bell bottoms were the thing. Although back then I wore bell bottom hip hugger jeans! Remember those? Ha so fun!

This 70s look would not be complete with out platform shoes. I remember before school started, the year I would enter 7th grade and my mom took me shopping for school clothes and I bought my first ever pair of platform shoes. I mean I was rockin" it. The coolest styles ever. I got the shoes in this outfit last summer and love them. They seem high but with the platforms they are so comfortable.

The last piece to this look is an old top I got at the thrift shop last winter here in Arizona. It is really almost too small and it has a missing button but it is so cute with the embroidered flowers that I wear it all the time. I love that if I raise my arms the sleeves are too short so I leave them unbuttoned and I love that somewhere, I can't remember where a button is missing. It's just so carefree as life was for me in the 70s.

my outfit

This look is made up of a vintage Chico's shirt, Express high waisted dark wash flared jeans, Ted Baker Platform shoes and a GiGi New York Satchel. I got the jeans last year and loved them so much I got several pair just before they sold out. I didn't think they would come back in but I just checked and they are back! I sized down in these due to the nice stretch. I usually wear a 4 in jeans but I get these in 2. Also they are long, I get the regular length and still wear 3 to 4 inch heels.  You can get them in short and tall lengths. I highly recommend them!

Softer Side of Both Sexes

THE OUTFIT

While I was out hiking this morning I was thinking about how many people say they love to wear gray and pink together. I wondered why I heard that more than about any other color combination. It just struck that maybe it is because these colors represent the softest side of both the female and male. I think of pinks as the most feminine color and I think of gray as the gentler side of men. Crazy maybe, I don't know.

For this outfit I wore a pair of what I call vintage jeans. I have owned them for around 12 years and will never give them up. I wore a pastel pink camisole and this gray sweater with big bell sleeves. I wore some silver sandals and carried a leopard bag. The bag is several years old and a favorite that will never go out of style either. For jewelry I wore my giant hoop earrings and a layered necklace. When I was all put together I could see this outfit would be on repeat for fall.

TEXAS

I have been watching the tragedy in Texas non stop and it is so heart breaking. This flooding reminds me of the time my home flooded in Missouri. Back in the early 90s we had a 100 year flood. We had no warning. Our house was next to a river. Before we knew it water was coming in our doors. We saw our car washed away and huge rail road ties raced by in the water along with everyone's barbecue grills and lawn furniture. We didn't know what to do because the water was up to our knees and the current was so fast we were afraid to try to wade out. Our refrigerator was shorting out and we were afraid of electricution. All our pictures, my sons saxaphone and furniture was being covered in water. We grabbed our cat and went out on the front porch. The city came by in a big front loader or something like that but I guess they didn't realize we were trapped because they just drove by. We (my husband and two sons and cat finally linked arms and started wading through the water and got to higher ground.

After the water subsided a couple of days later, we went home. Inches of slimy mud covered everything. Water damage was devastating. It was a little overwhelming and to make it worse the media showed up taking pictures. That upset me, they weren't there to help they were there to take video of our heartbreak. It made me sick. Anyway, we got through it all and it is a distant memory. My car was found and totaled and our house was repaired and we soon sold it and moved to higher ground.

That chapter of our life was closed. But today, I feel deeply for those going through this. All of us looking in the window at them isn't that helpful sometimes. No one wants to see their pain splashed all over for the world to see.
