Neutral Colors and Textures

I don't know how often I say this, but this may be one of my favorite outfits of all time. First it is comfort at its best, second I love the neutral colors on the beautiful textures. Third, the detail in this outfit is outstanding! I am wearing a chunky cardigan that laces down the side (obsessed), a top with an overlay of lace, simple denim and neutral boots with amazing sparkle and buckles. Ga Ga! I think this will be my Thanksgiving Day outfit.

How often do you think your outfit is your all time favorite?

Last Friday I ran in the Veteran's Day 5K to raise money for Veterans' causes. One hundred percent of the profits went to charity. It was a beautiful day to honor our veterans and soldiers. I was so honored though, to just try and keep up with this man carrying the flag. He was running the 11K.

Grey Days and Still a Sweet Life

I was away from home for a couple of weeks and I am so happy to be back. I always miss home when I am away and this was a very long trip for me. After a few days of getting back to normal I decided today was time to head outside to breath in fresh mountain air. It's in the mid fifties and partly cloudy and autumn is clearly heading to a close. When I look at the most basic things in my life, I am so grateful. Even grey days don't take away from a sweet life.

I'm wearing a grey sweater from Nordstrom, a scarf from Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy jeans, and Vince Camuto booties. A fun hat covered up my messy hair! Gotta love hats!

What are some of the things that make you grateful for your home?

Today, Stella and McCall have their checkup with the vet. This lovely lady has been taking care of my dogs since I got them, so 10 years for McCall. I wanted to show extra appreciation today when the world seems so harsh and angry right now. So, I made cranberry pumpkin walnut bread and added a jar of my pumpkin pecan butter to a gift basket for the office. It felt good to do something positive.

Poncho and Lefty

This outfit was much cuter in my head and I wasn't even going to post the pictures but after sitting on them for a couple weeks, I decided I kind of liked the outfit after all. Individually I love all the pieces of this outfit. The Michael Kors poncho is several years old, and has zippers on the sides and leather pockets. The jeans are old levi's so they are broken in and comfy. The top is newer and a little too big but also comfortable. The Dolce Vita booties are also a couple of years old and always make an outfit fun. Lastly, the hat was gifted to me a while back and I was really wanting a black hat to add to my collection so I was happy and grateful.

Do you ever visualize an outfit that doesn't quite turn out even though you know you love all the individual pieces?

Wrapped and Booted

I showed you this scarf on my last post. It is definitely seeing a lot of use. It is warm but has soft colors that make me smile and go with so many items in my wardrobe. I layered it with a camisole and duster for warmth. I wore black leggings and a pair of over the knee boots as well and carried a neutral bag. This outfit was cozy and gave me the option to take off layers if I got too warm. Layering is one of my favorite ways to dress because our climate changes a lot. The sun can be very warm but if you are out in the mountain air you will certainly feel the chill.

Do you have a favorite way to dress for your climate?

Plum Ruffles on a Neutral Column

I love to build a column in black or in neutral colors and then add a pop of color. In this outfit I wore this adorable plum colored INC jacket that I have had for many years. I love this jacket so much because of the color but also the ruffled bell sleeves and other ruffle detail. I wasn't quite finished adding color to this outfit though so I added this amazing bag purchased several years ago at Nordstrom Rack. That last touch seems just right.

Do you ever use the column trend to build an outfit? Any tips?

You Don't Have to Wear Your Blanket Scarf Around Your Neck

I jumped all over the blanket scarf trend as soon as I started seeing it on all the blogs. It looks so cute! But I think I have a short neck or something because getting all that scarf around my neck is not that comfortable. I don't even really like necklaces hanging around my neck. None the less, I am a sucker for fashion and I wear them for certain occasions. Not wanting to give up on them completely, I try to wear them different ways; one being just draped around my shoulders. The style really shows the beauty of the scarf, is comfortable and functional in that it keeps you warm. I have been playing with black and white lately and love the simplicity of this outfit.

Low Heeled Booties

Usually I gravitate toward shoes with a heel. Not a really high heel but around three inches give or take. Every since booties came into style I have wanted to find a pair with a low heel for everyday wear but all the low heeled booties just didn't have a modern look to me. Until this season that is. I am now seeing really cute booties with a low heel. The next test was, how comfortable are they. This pair is close to like wearing slippers. I wore them for hours and forgot I had them on. And on the cuteness scale I rate them a perfect 10. I wore a pair of skinny jeans that I had cut the hem off for that raw edge look and a tried a couple different tops for fun.

What is your favorite heel height?

How to turn a top into a knotted or twisted tee

I love the style right now of a tunic or longer top but I am short enough that often they over power my body and I get lost in all that fabric. But I can't seem to give up on trying to make it work. Recently I found a way to wear these kinds of tops that puts them in better proportion to by size. I take the tail end of a longer top, (lighter weight tops are easier to manage) and I twist it on the side and poke inside my pocket. You could also poke it inside the waistband. I was amazed how it gave my tops that look I am crazy about now called the knotted or twisted top. As a matter of fact I found a few on a very good sale and ordered them because I love the look so much. With this new technique I am using though I can make most of my tops look like they came that way.  I am having fun with a basic twisted top and a colorful blanket scarf. I next mission it to make my scarves not seem so overpowering. A way to do it came to me the other night and as soon as I try it, I will share it with you. I think a little cutting down to size will make all the difference.

Do you have tricks you use to make a trend work for you better?

Fall Fashion in a Mountain Setting

Like so many people, fall is my favorite season of the year. We usually have a long season which I love. It typically starts in early September and lasts to the beginning of November. This means I get to wear the fall styles and the colors I love the most. My closet if full of rich earthy colors, jewel tones and even some grey and charcoal items. Today, I wore a caramel tunic with a bold scarf, skinny jeans and fringe booties. I thought I would be way more into the fringe trend when it came out a couple of years ago but one pair of booties was all I ended up getting and they have filled that trend desire for me. The top is a tunic and kind of long on me so I took the tail and twisted it a little and then stuffed it in my pocket. It gave it that look I am seeing of the knotted or twisted tops, which I like.

Do you have any do it yourself trend ideas?

Falling for Fall Fashion

We are in full fall mode here in our part of the country. Chilly days and cold nights are here for the season. Today we had some sun and it felt good be outside taking pictures. I wanted to wear something with great fall color so I dug into my collection of jackets and found this one. It is an INC from Macy's and probably five or six years old, but it is one of those things you keep because you can wear it again and again. When I bought it, close fitting tops were the style so I had this almost body suit like top I wore with it. Thankfully loose tops are now in vogue and I can wear the jacket in a more relaxed way. Of course I am wearing the same jeans you see me wear all the time, a cami  and my favorite old necklace. There are some things that just define my style and I wear them over and over and they seem to go with everything in my closet. This necklace is one of those items. I have had it for eleven or twelve years and still reach for it most days.

Do you have an item that stands the test of time while defining your style?
