Favorite Summer Skirt Look

skirt 8.JPG

The Scoop

Every summer I pull out this skirt for a go around. I got it several years ago at a consignment shop and it is a classic that will always be in style. I love to buy classic pieces at consignment shops because you can get a quality piece at a great price and use it for years to come. And don’t you love skirts in the summer? They are so easy and I love to style them casual more than any other way.

skirt 9.JPG

My Look

I’m wearing an old white button down from Walmart, skirt by Anthropologie from local consignment store called Again. It is the most beautiful skirt in the colors I love with tiny sparkling beads all over. It is fully line and so well made. My sandals are Tory Burch and my bag is Mar Y Sol from Nortstrom (old). I don’t wear much jewelry in the summer because I like the simple look and comfort of nothing touching me.

I’m linking similar white shirts, same brand bags, same exact sandals in the color bleach and fun Anthropologie skirts. These are great skirts so always keep a look out if you don’t want to pay full price for when they are on sale, consigned or in a thrift shop.

Anyone know what this is?

I am always taking pictures when out walking or running and the other day I came across this beautiful bird. It let me get within ten feet without showing concern. I am not sure what it is, does anyone know? See the feather off the back of it’s head. It was so beautiful and I think around three feet tall.

Belt Bag Plus Red Sneakers Equals Summer Style and Where Have All The Bloggers Gone?

red 1.JPG

The Scoop

So this is a fun look that I wore over the weekend. It was total comfort and quite on trend. Again I share my love for the belt bag. What a simple thing to add to a look for chicness and practicality. Our highs on this day were only in the upper 60s so I grabbed an old white jean jacket. We went to town ate burgers at the gas station. They have a little cafe in the back of the local gas station that makes the best homemade burgers I have ever eaten. Then we roamed around town to walk off some of the load. ha ha.

To Blog or Not to Blog

I just saw another blogger posting on IG about whether blogging or the social media commitment that goes along with it is worth the work. I could totally relate.

I had an IG account with over 10,000 followers and shut it down because it was all so much work and the effort seemed to only bring out the worst in humanity. Sure lots of my gal pals supported me and I supported them but the pressure to always be posting and responding was just sucking the life out of me. So I shut it down. I started a new account with the intention of blocking anyone or anything that wasn’t there for my real message but I hardly go there because I can’t keep up with all the blocking I have to do. Daily I get bots that disguise as men. It just kind of disgusts me what Zuckerberg has done with his power and what could be such a simple pleasant social sharing.

I had already shut down my Facebook and Twitter but I hesitated with IG because I thought it directed more people to my blog. But then I thought why do I blog? Not to try to get a million followers, but to express myself and use my creative energy. I want to record a little bit of who I am for my children and grandchildren. It’s my journal and now I have almost six years worth of memories. Everything from bears on my porch, to snow storms to hiking mountains and picking wild mushrooms, its all there. I like the feeling of leaving that behind. I mean meeting lovely readers was more than icing on the cake but what more did I want? You know what I discovered? Nothing! This is all I want. A fun little blog, with amazing sweet readers and a journal of some of my life.

So shutting down FB, Twitter and IG didn’t ruin my blog. It only made me feel free and fabulous! And I have loyal readers who are fun and teach me so many wonderful things. I don’t feel I have to be perfect and sharing my imperfections makes it all more fun. I am still getting new readers every week too. I don’t do any collaborations anymore either. I just do the LiketoKnow.it affiliate program because they are so nice to work with and don’t make you feel like you have to compete and they always are helping in any way they can. There are some good platforms out there. I love Pinterest but have noticed lately more and more men/bots following my boards. It feels sort of predatory. So I guess is will be next to go.

At the end of the day I have seen a lot of my favorite bloggers disappear and I think I know why.

What about you, do you enjoy these media platforms? What do you think about blogs?

Suits Me Just Fine

suit 6.JPG

The Scoop

Nothing says, “I got this” more than a crisp suit. When I worked at the university my “go to” look was a suit. When I had an important meeting, speaking engagement or a deadline I always put on a power suit. They made me feel confident and ready for anything.

That’s why I am so loving that they are on trend this year. My gosh all the beautiful suits. I didn’t go out and buy a suit for this look because I wanted to show you that you probably have a suit in your closet. And it is perfect for any occasion. From barbecues to weddings they are the “it” look.

I’m not done suiting up this summer either, I have plans to wear shorts suits and skirt suits in all colors and styles. I have lots of blazers and jackets and I can almost always find a bottom that completes the suit look. They don’t need to be the same fabric or even the same color. That is the beauty of today’s suit trend.

suit 1.JPG
suit 5.JPG

My Look

This is not a suit as in the pieces don’t match and weren’t bought together. I got the pants many years ago because I wanted at least a couple of pairs of white slacks in my closet and the jacket was bought at a consignment store several years ago. My mules are fabulous white Calvin Klein’s (old also) and my cami is the infamous Express “Down Town” cami that every blogger swears by, including me. I have them in a couple of whites, cream, a couple of blacks, a mustard and a hot pink. Love love love these well made, lined, last for years cami’s. My bag was bought several years ago and was a splurge but I knew it was timeless in the black and white. It is a Michael Kors. I put on white Bauble Bar earrings, a white Chico’s Friendship bracelet and my apple watch with the leopard band. Lastly I have my initial necklace in gold. My closet is so curated after all these years that I rarely even need to buy new things. I love timeless pieces like each part of this look.

Mug Shot

I call this my mug shot. I have been doing a picture for a lot of my posts holding a mug and telling you the story behind the mug. This is my PBS mug. My god I love PBS television. It is almost all I watch. The things I Iearn are amazing and my view changes often after knowing more about a topic. My guilty pleasure now is watching the show The Durrells in Corfu. OMG, you must watch this series. There are three seasons now and one more is planned.

I also love all the cooking shows, they are far superior to the ones on the cooking channels. I leaned about boulder climbing on PBS and about Wilma Mankiller the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation. What an inspiring story.

But really in this picture I just wanted to eat my cookie. Ha ha. Below is a picture of the batch I made and the recipe. I added the peanut butter to the recipe and it worked perfectly but it is optional.

When I started looking for options I found it very difficult. Suits are terribly expensive but I found some fabulous items! Remember it is most fun to mix and match! Think outside the box and put items together that compliment but don’t match perfectly.

The Shirt Dress, A Summer Staple

shirt dress 20.JPG

The Scoop

So today’s post was fun to put together in that I was looking for different ways to style a shirt dress. It wasn’t too difficult to come up with three ways to wear one since there are a lot of YouTube videos showing several fabulous ways to style a shirt dress. I think these dresses are probably the most versatile piece of clothing out there.

shirt dress 19.JPG

Look One

For the first look I just simple wore the dress. Mine didn’t come with a belt so I added one that I already had. It is an old macrame belt that I thought worked perfectly. Sandals and a summer bag and that was all I needed to complete this look.

redress 12.JPG

Look Two

For this look I wore the dress as a duster. I took a basic white column of white jeans and a white tee and added a belt to the jeans. I wore sandals and carried a matching bag and this look was complete.

shirt dress 1.JPG

Look Three

For my final look I wore the dress as a top with the jeans. This was my favorite look. I belted the top and added heels this time to elevate the look. A summer clutch completed this look.

Travel Day Look

green top 12.JPG

The Scoop

The day I took these pictures we decided to head down to the city for a few days. The highs in the mountains were only in the 50s and low 60s and I needed to warm up. So we packed up and now we are enjoying the 70s and 80s. Funny how much difference a hundred miles can make.

I finally got my hair cut and now am practicing with my flat iron to create waves. I think once I get better at it I will really love the look.

green top 8.JPG

My Look

My look for traveling that day was my mom jeans and a fun green off-the-shoulder top. I added a belt with tassels, sandals and a summer bag to complete my look.

Wearing Shorts and Straight Leg Cropped Jeans For Us Over 50 Ladies

levis 7.JPG

The Scoop

Hey Gang! I made it back for the Saturday post. I almost thought I wouldn’t get it done because once again I started other projects that were major time and energy sucks. I painted my office which has high vaulted ceilings. It looks and feels so much nicer now. Any way I did manage to find a few things this week that I am mad about and I wanted to share them.

At over 50 are you still open to new trends? I am so on board with trying a new trend if I can make it my own. I was sure I would never wear the so called “mom jeans” but here I am in LOVE with these high waist, straight leg cropped jeans. I even sized up for a more relaxed fit and seriously I think they are so stylish! And by golly I am even embracing the clips in my hair that you are seeing so many ladies wearing! Is there nothing I won’t embrace? Ha ha!

iphone+1.jpg

You Know What Else?

Are you over 50 and still wearing shorts? I have thought over the last few years my days of wearing shorts in public were close to over but this spring the weather has been so fabulous that I have found myself wearing shorts every day the temps hit 70 degrees. Sure my legs don’t look like they did when I was younger but I am fine with my legs and am comfortable sporting a shorts look!

old navy 2.JPG

These Looks

In my first look I am wearing a pair of Levis, high waist straight leg cropped jeans. I went up a size because I thought they would look and feel cute a little over sized. I got the feel part right that’s for sure! I wore a top from Old Navy and in the first picture Sam Edelman Sandals. I layered some of my favorite necklaces, wore my apple watch with my leopard band and picked up cute bobby pins at Walmart for my hair.

My next look is something I am so excited about. I found shorts that have a five inch inseam! Gosh they feel so comfortable and are a length that I love. You can get them in seven inch length too! Finally shorts women can feel good in! I got these shorts in a striped, almost linen but less wrinkling fabric and wore the same top only in red. Both from Old Navy. I also got the shorts in a mustard yellow color. I am thinking I may go back and get the red floral pair that I saw in the store and the top in denim. All on sale right now.

old navy 1.JPG

Outside of the first pair of sandals, all my sandals are old. I carried my Ark bag in some pictures and in the others I carried a fabulous round bag with tassels that I got at TJ Max. It is made out of a sturdy jute fabric that I love!

old navy 4.JPG

Linking exact jeans, shorts, tops, Ark Bag and Sam Edelman Sandals. I got my round bag at TJ Max and linking up a very similar one also from TJ Max.

Tee Dress Style For Us That Are Over 50

tee dress 3.JPG

The Scoop

Good grief Gang, it has been about two months since my last blog post! How did that happen? I have been blogging for over five years now and for at least the last three I haven’t missed a post. But what can I say? I was dried up, had nothing inspiring to share and decided to stop, refresh and see how I felt after some time off.

I missed you all and our interactions a lot. I spent a little time studying the blog medium, trying to figure out where it is going and to find more direction for my blog. Came up empty! Ha ha. But that’s ok, I love to push my creative side and find new ways to do things and sometimes that means taking a break to refocus.

I was also beyond busy with life in general and just couldn’t find the time to do the work a blog requires. I am still way busy but I think I can get a good post in on Saturdays. I’ll try and see how it goes. While I was on break I was doing things like landscaping, painting my family room, dining room, kitchen and a couple of bedrooms. My project list in never ending it seems. Sometimes I worked myself right into bed for a day or two to recuperate. I’m like my dad that way. My mom says he never knows when to quit. But he is going on 88 this year and still rides a motorcycle and plants a garden so I guess it’s not such a bad thing.

Anyway let’s get on with this post, shall we?

tee dress 6.JPG

My Look

So yes we can wear a tee dress after 50. I love my tee dresses, they are comfortable, versatile and simply CUTE! I think it is important to find the right length for your height, this one works for me but usually I prefer shorter dresses to hit the most narrow part of my leg. Finding a dress with a nice weight in the fabric is important too. You don’t want anything showing through because it is too thin, but then you don’t want it too heavy and hot. I got this one at Costco while we were in Arizona this winter.

Now lets look at ways to style it so we get all the wear out of it and bang for our buck! Ha Ha.

For the first look above I added interesting sandals (Sam Edelman) and a bag (Rebbeca Minkoff) with some pop!

tee dress 9.JPG

Try wearing a fun jacket with your tee dress. I love this white distressed jean jacket from last summer.

I got my dress at Costco and they may still have them but here are some fabulous options.

tee dress 11.JPG

Elevate your tee dress with a nice blazer and matching sandals. Everyone should have a white blazer in their closet. It can make anything look dressy! I also grabbed my leopard clutch (Clare V.) which by the way I have a had for so many years and keep using every single season. It is a basic that never goes out of style.

My jackets are old but I’m linking similar ones for you.

tee dress 13.JPG

I took the blazer look one step further and added a fabulous silk scarf.

My clutch is Clave V and I linked it but it is a different color leopard (still really pretty) and I linked other similar bags.

tee dress 16.JPG

Next I added a leopard scarf (BP) around my waist and changed my bag (Marshals) and shoes (Steve Madden). The tan sandals go with anything and I find them very comfortable. My little wicker cross body bag is such a fun summer accessory. Oh and don’t forget to add a hat (Tommy Bahama) for an edgy look.

I am obsessed with all the shoes in this post and I am linking them for you.

Linking exact leopard scarf and other silk options!

tee dress 19.JPG

Big bold sunglasses are hot hot hot right now. I remember wearing them back in the 70s and 80s. Good things come back around eventually. These were from amazon and are out of stock in black.

My hat above a couple of pictures is a Tommy Bahama but I am linking great options!

tee dress 22.JPG

Here I am wearing my sneakers and a ball cap. Boom, ready for my seeing the grandkid’’s ball games or walking around the farmers market, right?

tee dress 24.JPG

My favorite way to wear this dress was with a scarf in my hair. There’s just something about it that makes me feel like I put some effort into the details.

And that’s it gang, I think I could have gone on all day but this gives you an idea of ways I like to style a tee dress!

What is your favorite way to wear a tee dress?

Spring Fashion 2019

lav 5.JPG

The Scoop

Wow March is already rolling down the highway at the speed of light! Can you believe Daylight Savings Time begins next Sunday, March 10th? I am loving the longer days and the warmer weather here in the city. But read on to see our house in the mountains barely peeking out from under all the snow. We spent the weekend up there and it was sunny and gorgeous but boy so much snow.

Today some of my kitchen appliances are being delivered and then the rest will be installed tomorrow. The existing appliances here at the house in the city are original to the house so around 19 years old. We replaced the refrigerator when we moved in last summer and now we are doing the stove, microwave and dishwasher. I picked out my new counter top and will order it today. I am hoping it wont take long to get installed. I know Quartz is all the rage. I was told by an expert that 90% of what they sell now is quartz. But I just don’t like it. So I am going with what I like and getting granite. It is also crazy because Quartz is more expensive than granite and its man made. Go figure.

I guess I am getting old, because I am over the open concept, I love rooms. I want real natural materials like stone and wood in the house and I love color. I read that although the all white kitchen is strong the new kitchens are trending toward color, natural elements and a bit of vintage vibe and that is totally me!

lav 1.JPG

My Look

You know how what you are focused on at the moment is what you enjoy? Well I am focused on the house update so I am really going casual a lot. I mean, old jeans, tees and sweats style! Ha ha.

But we were out looking at landscaping ideas today so I pulled myself together somewhat. Everything is old. I am wearing white jeans by Jessica Simpson, a J. Crew top, a Free People cardigan, Steve Madden wedges and carrying an Ark bag. There’s no snow here in the city and it is sunny and in the upper 40s to low 50s. I am so loving it. Big hoop earrings were my only jewelry. I love these earrings so much I think I will add a few more to my collection this spring.

Snow In The Mountains

Below are pictures of our house in the mountains! You cannot see the front door at all. We’ve had this place since 2003 and I have never seen quite this much snow. You can see in some of the pictures the tree that fell down across our circle drive and landed right down our sidewalk to the front door. It’s a miracle it didn’t hit our garden shed or the house. We are at the bottom of a ski hill and it was reported to have gotten more than eleven feet of snow in the month of February alone. Argh!

Spring Trends Alert on Northwest Mountain Living & Style

The Scoop

I'm on the prowl for spring fashion! And I think I am on to some really fun new things. I thought I would share what I am loving right now that will take me through spring and summer!

Most of these things were something I dabbled in last spring and summer but I am seeing them bumped up a little on the style scale. First, scarves.  I wear them around my neck, wrist, in my hair, around my waist and even tied on my bags. This year they have some fun shapes and sizes so I tied one on the handle of my bag for a fun twist. Second, platforms. I am going crazy over these platform sneakers. They are so cute with jeans, shorts, skirts, and dresses! Obsessed. The next thing I am embracing even more fully than before (if that can happen) is tunics (longer tops). They have such a casual relaxed vibe but with all the colors and styles they are a major staple for me.  You can wear them with the hem out, assorted tucks or even as a dress if they are long enough. Fill my closet please!

In this look I am wearing  a tunic that buttons half way down in neutral stripes. I did a front tuck with this look but sometimes I pull the hem through my belt loop on the side. This is a perfect anytime top. My jeans are Lucky Brand skinny cropped jeans, shoes are platform Steve Madden sneakers and I'm carrying a Tory Burch tote with a scarf from target wrapped around the handle.  You can see the care tag still on my scarf. For some reason I hate to cut those off but I think I will have to in this case. I'm wearing a white watch and Kendra Scott turquoise earrings to complete this look.

Color My Mood

boots 3.JPG

The Scoop

Seriously gang, rich colors like those in this outfit make my heart sing. They make me happy. Finding the perfect combination of colors is a lucky gift when you can find them. These blues and plums complement each other like they were meant to be.

We are back in Idaho checking on the houses in the mountains and valley. There is a ton of snow at the mountain place and it is still coming down. There are avalanche warnings going off on the TV as I write this post. I hope to get some pictures this week. In the valley it is cloudy and raining a ton. Winter in Idaho is never dull, that is for sure. I have learned to enjoy the climate no matter where I am though. I always say, “you can laugh or you can cry and I chose to laugh!”

My Look

I am wearing a Karen Kane top, Free People cardigan, 7 for all Mankind jeans and boots from Target. And gang, they are my favorite pair of OTK boots. Everything in this look is at least a season or two old but I wear them often because of the fun colors. My leather cross body bag is a major fun thrift find bought in Arizona last winter. All I can say it this is one of my favorite winter. outfits.

Poncho Style

free people 2.JPG

The Scoop

The weather here in AZ has been cool and rainy and perfect for wearing ponchos, jackets and for layering. When I lived here for many years I don’t remember many Februaries so chilly but I know those who live here all year long really enjoy this change from the long hot season.

I think we are going to have to cut our stay here short. Our security cameras were hacked and only one is working and it is showing downed trees in the yard at our place in the mountains. These trees are gigantic too. And they are really close to the house. Last year we had one fall on the house. The snow is really deep and heavy this year so a tree falling is fairly common but you don’t want it damaging property. We have friends checking on things so depending on what they find out we will need to go back.

My February Uniform

IMG_9465.JPG

The Scoop

If you have been reading along this month you know I have been all about health and fitness. I have tried to put everything else on the back burner and put my health first. Heart disease runs in my family and some have had the window maker (worst kind of heart attack) at the age I am now. Yep 58. Most recently my brother passed away about a year after his heart attack because it damaged his heart beyond repair. He was 59, had is heart attack at 58. So I am trying to be proactive. I even went to get blood drawn for a special test but passed out before they could get enough blood so I have to go back again. This will be my third try because I keep fainting! Ugh!

IMG_9466.JPG

Anyway one of my theories is if I am always dressed to workout I will do so when the time is right. You can see my current workout routine here in my last post. Recently I put together these items to make what I am calling my February uniform.

IMG_9468.JPG

My Look

I am wearing American Eagle joggers, Adidas Stan Smith sneakers, Madewell Tee, zip up sweatshirt and a ball cap. I’m carrying a packpack that I have had a long time.

Also linking same tee by Madewell. They run a little large, I am wearing xs would usually get a s. Casual Friday Work Outfit

The Scoop

I used to work at universities at an executive level and therefore wore a lot of business wear. My favorite was to wear a pants suit but I also loved pencil skirts and sometimes dresses. Since I started working from home I no longer need to dress that formally but now and then I like to wear business casual.

Many workplaces allow business casual on Fridays and some most days of the week. What a wonderful world we live in! Ha ha.

My Look

In my last post I told you I had picked up a couple of black blazers at the thrift shops and how excited I was to style them. In this post I am styling the Banana Republic blazer. I’m wearing it with an older Loft white button down shirt and a new pair of Joe’s cropped jeans and a pair of fabulous black pumps. I found these pumps a couple of years ago, also at a local Phoenix thrift shop. I carried my Louis Vuitton Never Full MM to complete this look.

There is nothing I don’t like about the outfit and I would wear it for so many occasions, like a date night, lunch with friends or even to go shopping. I have other black blazers but this is totally my favorite now.

Create Your Own Look

Linking fabulous blazers from Banana Republic that look just like mine as well as a fabulous J. Crew one. And linking exact jeans too.

Along with your white shirt or tee add a pair of pointy toe pumps and a power bag and you are good to go! I prefer a lower heel, it makes you look more in control somehow.
