Hello summer . . .

I have had a rough couple of weeks. I made a trip back to the  Midwest to visit family and it was a very stressful trip. So stressful that for the first time in most of my adult life, I got really sick. I ran a temperature for several days and felt lucky to make it back on the right plane and home. Yesterday was the first day in almost two weeks that I felt like moving much and today I felt like a veil had been lifted and life seemed good again. Being stressed and sick is bad but in my case it reminded me of all I am grateful for, mostly good health.

This evening it was the warmest day we have had yet this summer. Low 80s. Just a couple of days ago our high was in the 50s. I was ready for heat and I put on a casual maxi dress, poured a little wine and stepped out into the world again.

I've never worn this dress. I bought it last fall online at Nordstrom Rack when summer clothes were very discounted. It is a Karen Kane. I picked up a few dresses then, knowing I would use them this summer. I think a maxi says summer casual like nothing else. You can be dressed nice, but at the same time be very comfortable. I wore a pair of Tommy Bahama flip flops also bought in the fall at 6PM.com and topped my outfit with a boat hat. My third piece? Ha Ha. A glass of wine!

I found two new nail colors that I am crazy about. A China Glaze in 652 called Recycle; a beautiful grey and an OPI You Don't Know Jacques, an amazing brown color. They are both fun and unexpected which makes me smile.

I made this website, my homepage. I am making this recipe tonight. I love all the healthy recipes and tips I get from SkinnyTaste.com!

I'm linking up with Style Nudge for Shoe and Tell and Not Dead Yet Style for Visible Monday. I hope to see you there!

The real me . . .

If you want to know the real me (probably not, ha ha) this is it. I can see the art in pretty dresses and high heels and love to wear them but I would choose jeans, tennis shoes and t-shirts most days of the week. Throw in a ball cap and cozy cardigan and voila, perfection!  My black skinny jeans are Buffalo, But First Coffee t-shirt is from Target, the black cardigan is an INC, Adidas (Superstar) tennis shoes are from Nordstrom and a VW cap complete this outfit. The cap has a Volkswagen Beetle embroidered on it; so fun! The sneakers are hands down the most comfortable shoes I own. I wear them with casual dresses or shorts for a relaxed look.

off the shoulders, maybe not

I have been mad about off-the-shoulder/cold shoulder tops for a couple of seasons now. I think they work for everyone. They add interest to an outfit that can go from formal to very casual. I'm a fan for sure.

Today is my birthday; I already posted about my birthday month but today is the big day. We are going out to eat at an amazing barbecue restaurant in a tiny neighboring town called New Meadows. This place (The Intersection Barbecue, Bar and Grill) has the most amazing barbecue, which is probably one of my favorite things to eat. I decided to wear a denim off-the-shoulder top, black skinny jeans, and tan wedge shoes. My third piece was a fun belt.I wore my southwestern style jewelry and for my pictures I grabbed a straw hat and bag. It all seemed like, lets eat barbecue! The top was full with nice details but when I put it on it felt like just too much top flying around, so I tucked it in. After pulling the top off the shoulders, I decided I liked it better not pulled down. I really liked the peasant blouse look. With that, this look came together . . .

My birthday month . . .

My daughter-in-law taught me about your birthday month, birthday week and birthday! She is so sweet and funny and the month of her birthday is celebrated everyday. I love the idea, being born and living life is a great gift and should be recognized. Don't you think?

Birthdays for me have never really been celebrated, barely even noticed, but as I grow older I become more grateful for life. I realize how lucky I am to be reaching the age I am. I admit, each year is a little more scary than the last. When I was in my forties, I thought growing old would be an adventure, something I felt I could do gracefully. I didn't think I would mind the inevitable changes. When I started really noticing actual changes however, it was harder than I thought. Since then I swing up and down about how I feel about aging. I try hard to look to role models, eat right, exercise and keep a positive frame of mind, but some days the whole process beats me. I was the unbreakable optimist as a young woman and that is the one change I notice the most . . . I'm not quite as optimistic. Part of my routine these days is to wake up and start over; each day is a day to enjoy and do better. Like, last night I ate potato chips and lemon cake for dinner (I rarely do this), today I will be eating salad and grilled chicken for dinner (I mostly do this). I don't worry about the unhealthy way I treated my body yesterday, I will just do better today.

So, this is my birthday month! I turn 56 this year. In many ways I feel better than I did 20 years ago. I can do things I couldn't then, like run several miles at a time. I can cook better, distinguish between good and bad wine, enjoy the simple things in life and be at peace with myself.

The first outfit of my birthday month was put together, to meet my girlfriend for lunch. We ate at a local Mexican restaurant that has a patio right over the lake. It was a beautiful day! I wore, flat sandals (Tommy Hilfiger from 6PM.com), skinny jeans (Levis), a light weight sleeveless top (TJ Max) and a lightweight long cardigan (Nordstrom). My bag is from Dillards. Everything I have on is old but I was so excited to see that I could pull pieces out of my closet that had the same colors. It all pulled together to be comfortable and summery. I love the  light greens, pinks, blues and oranges. One of my favorite trends right now is the long cardigan and dusters. I LOVE them. I have several that are very light weight that will be perfect with sleeveless tops this summer, where here in the mountains, even the warmest nights will be in the 50s.
